The Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos lit up on Sunday, June 22, 2025, as football and philanthropy came together at a high-profile charity match hosted by the Troost-Ekong Foundation under its #PlayForPurpose initiative.
Organized by Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, the event showcased football’s potential as a force for social good, aiming to support youth access to education, healthcare, and sports. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu kicked off the match and pledged continued support for grassroots sports development and strategic partnerships that empower young Nigerians.
The match featured top-tier talents in two star-studded teams:
- Team Green: Wilfred Ndidi, Tolu Arokodare, Moses Simon, Brown Ideye, and Stanley Nwabali.
- Team White: Odion Ighalo, Obafemi Martins, John Ogu, and Victor Boniface.
Their presence electrified the atmosphere, drawing fans, government officials, and aspiring athletes across the state. Governor Sanwo-Olu, who also participated in the kickoff, praised Troost-Ekong’s off-pitch leadership: “His commitment to giving back and empowering the next generation is truly inspiring,” he posted on X.
The match followed Lagos’ impressive performance at the 22nd National Sports Festival and aligned with efforts to position the state as a hub of sporting excellence.
