Tension is currently brewing in Kano State over the plan to impeach the Deputy Governor of the state, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, by the members of the state House of Assembly following his refusal to join Governor Abba Yusuf in defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In fact, a highly influential group in the state, the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has cautioned against proceeding with the plan, warning that such a move could deepen political divisions in the state.
The movement is very popular in the state and loyal to the former governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement, while giving the warning in a statement on Saturday, March 7, described the planned impeachment as troubling, urging the lawmakers and members of the executive behind the move to avoid actions that could be interpreted as politically motivated.
The statement, issued by its spokesman, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, said the unfolding political developments in the state were already generating concern and also creating tension among the people of the state.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement, while giving the warning in a statement on Saturday, March 7, described the planned impeachment as troubling, urging the lawmakers and members of the executive behind the move to avoid actions that could be interpreted as politically motivated.
The statement, issued by its spokesman, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, said the unfolding political developments in the state were already generating concern and also creating tension among the people of the state.
“The people of Kano are closely watching the unfolding events and there is growing concern that the impeachment move may be driven more by political considerations than by genuine constitutional necessity,” the statement read.
.“Impeachment must never be reduced to a tool for settling political disagreements or rearranging political alignments. It must be guided strictly by justice, fairness and the interest of the people,” the statement added.
The Movement told the governor and other political actors in the state that the success of the administration was built on the sacrifices, loyalty and unity of Kwankwasiyya supporters across the 44 local government areas of Kano State.
“The victory that produced this government was not the achievement of any single individual. It was the product of the sacrifices, loyalty and unity of Kwankwasiyya faithful across the 44 local governments of Kano State,” it said.
.“Impeachment must never be reduced to a tool for settling political disagreements or rearranging political alignments. It must be guided strictly by justice, fairness and the interest of the people,” the statement added.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement therefore warned that any action perceived as targeting key figures within the administration could send the wrong signal to supporters who contributed to the electoral success of the movement
The Movement further urged members of the Kano State House of Assembly to exercise their constitutional responsibilities with caution and independence.
“The authority of the Assembly comes directly from the people and such authority must be exercised with wisdom, fairness and a clear sense of responsibility to the electorate,” it said.
“History has shown that when political power is used in ways that appear unjust or vindictive, the people ultimately deliver their verdict through democratic means,” the Movement added.
The Movement further urged members of the Kano State House of Assembly to exercise their constitutional responsibilities with caution and independence.
“The authority of the Assembly comes directly from the people and such authority must be exercised with wisdom, fairness and a clear sense of responsibility to the electorate,” it said.
“History has shown that when political power is used in ways that appear unjust or vindictive, the people ultimately deliver their verdict through democratic means,” the Movement added.
