U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by calling on Israel to “pardon” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or cancel his ongoing corruption trial altogether.
Trump made the remarks in a post on his Truth Social platform, describing Netanyahu as a “great hero” and a “warrior” who should not face prosecution.
Trump linked his appeal to what he called the United States’ decisive role in “saving Israel” during its recent war with Iran and added that the U.S. would now also “save” Netanyahu.
Netanyahu, who is facing charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust dating back to 2020, has denied all allegations. He responded to Trump’s comments with appreciation, thanking him for his “tremendous support for Israel” and “moving support for me.”
Trump characterized the case against Netanyahu as a “witch hunt,” echoing language he has used to dismiss investigations into his own alleged misconduct in the U.S. He also criticized the timing of Netanyahu’s upcoming court appearance, calling the trial a “travesty of justice.”
The remarks have drawn backlash in Israel, particularly from opposition leader Yair Lapid, who said Trump should not interfere in the legal affairs of a sovereign state. Lapid suggested the timing of Trump’s remarks might be linked to pressure on Netanyahu over the ongoing Gaza conflict and hostage negotiations.
Netanyahu’s trial has been repeatedly delayed due to Israel’s war with Hamas, fueling speculation that the prime minister may be leveraging the conflict to postpone both legal proceedings and potential elections.
