A tragic accident at Ijora Causeway, Lagos, on Tuesday claimed the lives of two people, including a serving police officer, when a fully loaded 40-foot container truck overturned on a commercial tricycle.

The incident occurred inward Ijora 7Up, beneath the Ijora Bridge, after the truck, with registration number XP 368 AKD, reportedly lost control while attempting a difficult maneuver. The container crushed a tricycle with registration number KJA 364 QN, killing two passengers instantly.

One of the deceased was confirmed to be a police officer. His remains were evacuated to a morgue in Yaba by security operatives. The second victim, a female passenger, was later identified and retrieved by her family.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), working with emergency responders, rescued two survivors, including the tricycle operator. Both sustained severe leg fractures and were taken by Lagos State Ambulance Service to Jimsan Hospital, Gasikiya, Ijora, for urgent treatment.

The chaotic scene drew angry crowds who attempted to set the container truck ablaze. A swift response by security personnel from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri Police Divisions helped restore order and protect rescue workers.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as “deeply grievous and most regrettable,” while offering condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the recovery of the injured. He praised emergency agencies for their quick response, which prevented further casualties.

Bakare-Oki also urged truck and articulated vehicle drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially when navigating bridges and congested areas, to avoid similar tragedies.
