It was a sad day at the Nasarawa State University where two female students died due to the stampede that occurred at the university’s convocation Square on Friday where palliatives donated by the State Government were to be distributed to the students.
The Head of Information Abraham Habu in a phone conversation with Channels TV confirmed the incident disclosing that the palliatives given by State government to distribute to students was to lessen the effects of economic hardship in the country.
He noted that palliatives were to be distributed today but some students overpowered the security men on ground thereby causing stampede that later resulted to the death of students and some sustaining injuries
National President of Nasarawa State Student Association, Yunusa Baduku while confirming the incident to newsmen noted that most students affected by the stampede have been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
He said “Seriously, what happened this morning at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, is uncalled for, and very pathetic.
“After our arrangement for the distribution of palliatives to the students which was to hold at the University’s convocation square, they (students) suddenly arrived at the venue in their numbers and overpowered the security.
“They broke through the gate into the convocation square where the bags of rice were to be shared. Unfortunately most of our female students sustained several degrees of injuries, while others got suffocated because of the population at the venue for the distribution of the palliatives.
“Right now, I am at the Federal Medical Centre Keffi, where we brought some of our students for emergency treatment.
The student leader further said he got an official report that one student had died as a result of the unfortunate incident. “For the number of those injured, I cannot confirm that at the moment because some of them are at the school’s clinic while others are here at the FMC, Keffi receiving treatment.”
He appreciated the managements of the university, student leaders and those representing the state government for their swift intervention in helping the affected students to get necessary medical attention.
He said “I want to commend the school management, the student’s leaders and even the state government for standing by us at the time like this. They are all doing their best to address the situation, and to ensure that normalcy returns to the school environment.”
