The police in Libya have arrested two Nigerian ladies and other members of a criminal gang that held a Nigerian woman captive for many days while demanding ransom.
It was gathered that the counter-terrorism force of the country’s police got an intelligence report that the undocumented Nigerian woman was being held captive in Misrata, a city in Northwestern Libya, by equally undocumented criminal gang among whom were some Nigerians including the two ladies.
Following the intelligence report gathered, the officers were said to have invaded the criminals hideout and conducted what the police in the country described as a “sting operation” where they arrested the gang members and rescued the Nigerian woman.
The Libyan police added that investigation into the case was ongoing in order to uncover all circumstances and apprehend remaining individuals involved in the abduction.
Many Nigerians always get stranded in Libya after travelling to the North African country with the hope of getting to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea and after some time, some of them resort to criminal activities.
No fewer than 20,000 stranded Nigerians have been repatriated from Libya in 2025 alone and despite this, many are still in the country engaging in all sorts of criminal activities.
The Nigerian in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has also consistently warned Nigerians to always avoid taking the deadly route to Libya in order to get to Europe through the sea.
