The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that Uganda has launched a vaccination trial for the Ebola Sudan virus, with the initial phase focusing on the administration of doses to those determined to be at the highest risk of contracting the virus. The trial began just four days after the outbreak of Ebola Sudan was confirmed, highlighting the urgent need for preventative measures to stem the spread of the virus.
In a statement, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, revealed that the Ugandan health ministry had initiated a vaccine trial for the Ebola Sudan virus with the WHO’s backing.
Tedros said on X “This vaccination trial was initiated with record speed… while ensuring full compliance with international and national regulatory and ethical requirements.”
He said the trial would involve “contacts of people with the disease, and contacts of the contacts”.
The WHO chief posted a picture of an injection being administered with WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan present at the scene.
Tedros said, “The trial demonstrates the importance of investing in R&D for vaccines and treatments and outbreak response preparedness, as well as partnerships.
“WHO will continue supporting the government in a comprehensive response to bring the outbreak under control.”

Uganda’s health ministry confirmed an outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) on Thursday after the death of a 32-year-old male nurse from the virus in Kampala.
This development marks the first known occurrence of EVD in Uganda since 2012 and is particularly concerning as Sudan Ebola is one of six species of Ebola virus, known for its virulence and ability to spread rapidly if left unchecked.
Historically, Uganda has been disproportionately affected by Sudan strain Ebola outbreaks, having experienced five of the eight known instances of Sudan EVD since its discovery, while Sudan itself has reported three outbreaks.
The Sudan strain of Ebola virus remains a pressing global health concern, as no approved vaccine currently exists for this particular species of the virus.
