Value: Packaging vs substance

Sometime ago, I hired a makeup artist to do a glamorous makeover on my face for a professional photoshoot. She did a super-amazing job! My face looked spotless and glowed. And as expected, I got numerous compliments for my new look. However, after the photoshoot, I went home and washed off the makeup.

Guess what?

The pimples that the makeup had covered, stared back at me. In addition to that, the true shape of my nose resurfaced as the whole makeup highlights and coutures were gone. Nonetheless, my dimples and all other natural features remained. Herein lies the difference between packaging and substance.

In the context of this post, my professional makeover refers to a beautiful packaging, while my natural features refer to my true substance. Sadly, a lot of people invest more in their packaging than in their substance.

This new year, as in other years, some singles have done a wardrobe overhaul, changed their location (residence), invested in more beauty products, registered in a gym, amongst other package-boosting efforts, all in the bid to attract a life partner. Of course, great packaging is important, especially in today’s world. Packaging makes you attractive and appealing to more prospects. Packaging is what your potential suitors will see first.

Packaging ranges from your physical looks, to your dressing, to your phonetics, to your composure in public, and every other external thing that people can easily notice.

Substance on the other hand is your character, your skillset, your value, your worth… who you really are in your closet when no one is watching. Your substance is the aftertaste in the mouth of those who get closer to you to have a deeper relationship with you. It is what determines if your chykers and potential spouse will eventually subscribe to become your life partner.

Commenting on this topic, my elder sister, made such a wise contribution. She said:

“Packaging should be an enhancement of what is. Don’t just remain a “diamond in the rough”. Get polished. Improve your skills. I mean, get a make-over. Use “tush” packaging to give your “substance” an edge. That is the basic difference between plantain chips and “pekere”.

It’s about playing up your strengths and improving on your weaknesses. Afterall man looks at the outward appearance, before giving you a chance to reveal what’s on the inside – your substance.”

So, yes, both packaging and substance are important. Nonetheless, it is wrong to invest in your packaging more than you invest in developing and expanding your substance. Packaging may get you through the door; substance however, is what will ensure you are not thrown out of that door.

Got any questions or comments on this? Please share them below. Till I come your way again next week, ensure that you’re more valuable than the packaging you put on.

Love and Wisdom,
