The Nigeria Police Force on Monday, April 27, disclosed that its men rejected the sum of N100 million from some vandals after they were arrested with railway items worth N400 million.
The Nigeria Police said this in a statement, saying its Force Intelligence Department Special Tactical Squad (FID-STS) recorded what it described as “the major breakthrough.”
It added that it arrested two men involved in the large-scale vandalisation of critical national infrastructure and the recovery of railway materials worth over ₦400 million.
It gave the names of those arrested as Chisom Goodnews (aged 32 years) and Ahmed Adamu (aged 22 years), saying they were arrested on April 9 around 6:00 p.m. in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, following credible intelligence received by the operatives.
The police added that the operation led to the interception of a trailer conveying approximately 60 tonnes of vandalised railway tracks and sleepers which were concealed under sacks of groundnut sacks in an attempt to evade detection and were being transported from Bauchi State to Ilorin, Kwara State.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the truck was contracted for the sum of N2.5 million to transport the vandalised materials, while further findings indicated an organised supply chain linked to receivers of such stolen infrastructure,” the Nigeria Police said in the statement.
According to the report, during the investigation, the operatives involved in the operation reportedly rejected an offer of ₦100 million bribe made in a bid to compromise the process and secure the release of the suspects and exhibits.
“The trailer used in conveying the items has been recovered, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate, including the intended receivers, and to recover additional exhibits,” the statement added.
