A widow, Mrs Agnes Onu-Nwokorie, has cried out for justice over the murder of her daughter, Nnennaya, allegedly by some of her husband’s family members four years ago over the man’s burial programme and inheritance.
She has therefore appealed to the Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to intervene so that she will get justice.
Onu-Nwokorie disclosed that her daughter was murdered on December 23, 2021 in the family compound at Anike, Onicha-Igboeze in Onicha Local Government Area, after the death of her husband who was also the father of her two daughters.
She alleged that after her daughter was murdered, her head and leg were chopped off by the killers, prompting her to flee their home immediately after the burial.
She said that the Ebonyi State Police Command launched a manhunt for her killers shortly after the incident was reported but no one had been arrested four years after the incident.
She alleged that due to threats to her life by the suspected killers of her daughter, she fled from the community.
She said: “I have no home now, our lands have been seized and all the economic trees sold. It is disheartened that up till now, no arrest has been made.
“When I lost my husband, some family members planned to bury him without involving me and my two female children, late Nnennaya and Juliet Onu, who is now married.
“My daughter Nnennaya was killed because she insisted that she and her sister must be involved in the burial ceremony and her father’s inheritance.
“My late daughter reported the refusal to be at the burial to the family law centre, where those suspected to be involved in the murder were officially mandated to stop such move of burying my husband without involving her children.
“Our family members have denied me access to our house, the piece of land and the cassava on it had been sold without informing me.
“This is how we have been suffering in the hands of the people who are supposed to be our shield,” she said.
The widow appealed to the governor and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to unmask the perpetrators of the crime, alleging that the suspects were threatening to harm whoever tried to intervene in the matter.
Speaking on the issue, the Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Joshua Ukandu, urged the widow to report at the command in order to identify the section that handled the case.
Ukandu said the new Commissioner of Police, Anthonia Uche-Anya, had directed that those involved in the murder should be arrested and brought to justice.
