Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has withdrawn from ongoing reconciliation efforts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), blaming Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for undermining attempts to resolve the party’s post-2023 election crisis.
In a strongly worded statement, Wike accused Makinde of breaching internal agreements and fueling division within the party. He also alleged that Makinde, in collaboration with Enugu State Governor Peter Mba, attempted to force leadership changes, including replacing Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary—a position affirmed by the Supreme Court.
“Since after the 2023 General Election, the PDP has been wantonly swinging from one part of a slippery precipice to another,” Wike said, citing dishonesty and lack of trust among party stakeholders.
He criticized recent reconciliation meetings, including one led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, claiming they were rendered ineffective due to Makinde’s actions. Wike also referenced the aborted zonal congress in Jos, which he said violated party procedures through the improper use of the Deputy National Secretary’s signature in INEC communications.
“I’ve been a committed member of this party since 1998,” Wike stated. “But I can no longer continue in a process where trust is repeatedly broken.”
Wike’s exit is expected to deepen internal tensions within the PDP, as the party enters a crucial phase of restructuring and preparation for future elections.
