Real Madrid’s new era under Xabi Alonso began brightly with a 3–1 win over Mexico’s Pachuca in their second group game of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Played in scorching heat at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, the victory marked Alonso’s first since replacing Carlo Ancelotti on June 1.
Madrid capitalized early after Pachuca’s Raúl Asencio was sent off in the 7th minute for denying a clear chance. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring in the 35th, followed by Arda Güler’s composed finish. Federico Valverde sealed the result in the 70th minute before Pachuca’s Elias Montiel grabbed a late consolation.
Despite being outshot 25–8, Madrid was ruthlessly efficient, scoring with all three shots on target. Thibaut Courtois starred with 10 saves, keeping the Spanish side ahead under pressure.
Alonso’s tactical imprint was clear: fluid rotations, wide play, and a mix of youthful flair and experience. However, the game ended on a sour note after Antonio Rüdiger accused Pachuca captain Gustavo Cabral of racial abuse, triggering FIFA’s three-step protocol. The incident is under review.
With four points, Madrid needs only a draw against RB Salzburg on June 26 to reach the knockout stage.
