Nigerian teenager Joshua Udoh has made history as the youngest African player to feature in a FIFA Club World Cup match. The 17-year-old midfielder debuted for UAE club Al Ain in their 5–0 defeat to Juventus during a Group G match at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
Udoh came on in the 90th minute, replacing Soufiane Rahimi, and at 17 years and 349 days, became the youngest Nigerian and African to appear in the prestigious tournament. While the game ended in disappointment for Al Ain, Udoh’s brief appearance marked a personal triumph and a proud moment for African football.
Juventus dominated from start to finish. Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceição each scored twice, while Kenan Yildiz added a powerful long-range strike. Despite a disallowed goal and a strong save from Al Ain’s Kodjo Laba, the Emirati side offered little resistance.
For Udoh, the match was a first taste of elite football—an experience that could launch a promising career. While Juventus move on to face Wydad Casablanca and Manchester City, Udoh’s milestone stands out as a shining moment of hope amid defeat.
