The Enugu State Police Command on Saturday, September 5, said it arrested and detained 6,240 suspected criminals, rescued 211 kidnapped victims, recovered 156 weapons and 1,486 rounds of ammunition within 17 months of sustained security operations in the state.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu regarding the level of criminal activities in the state.
According to the statement, those arrested included 158 for kidnapping, 186 for armed robbery,188 for murder and 57 for rape and defilement, 273 linked to cultism and 63 for unlawful possession of firearms.
The commissioner said the remaining 5,315 suspects were detained for various other offences, including stealing, breaking and vandalism.
Among the weapons recovered from the suspected criminals were 43 AK-47 rifles, one G-3 assault rifle and others.
The command attributed the achievements to sustained intelligence-led operations, proactive policing and effective security collaboration with neighbouring states.
He highlighted the deployment of the Violent Crime Response Unit, intensified border patrols under the Inspector-General of Police’s Handshake Patrol initiative, and improved emergency response through the Distress Response Squad and Command-and-Control Centre.
