Authorities in Plateau State have arrested 22 individuals allegedly involved in a deadly mob attack on a passenger bus in Mangun village, Mangu Local Government Area. The incident occurred around 9:47 p.m. on Friday and claimed the lives of eight passengers.
According to a statement issued Saturday by the state police spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, the bus was transporting passengers from Zaria, Kaduna State, to Quan’pan LGA of Plateau for a wedding ceremony when it reportedly lost its way and was intercepted by a violent mob.
The attackers set the vehicle ablaze, killing eight and injuring several others. Police and security operatives intervened following a directive from the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, successfully dispersing the mob and rescuing 21 passengers—14 unhurt and seven with varying injuries.
Mr Adesina visited the area on Saturday alongside other security personnel to assess the situation and reinforce measures aimed at preventing further violence. He confirmed that 22 suspects had been apprehended and assured the public of a thorough investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department, supported by intelligence operatives.
In response to the incident, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attack, labeling it “senseless and inhumane.” He extended condolences to the victims’ families and directed security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Authorities have appealed for calm and urged residents to cooperate with investigators by providing relevant information to help avert future occurrences.
