At least 26 people lost their lives when a passenger boat carrying local traders capsized on the River Niger in Kogi State, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The incident occurred earlier in the week as the traders were reportedly heading to a local market. The overloaded vessel is believed to have lost balance midstream before overturning, throwing dozens into the water. Rescue workers and local divers managed to recover 26 bodies, while search efforts continue for others feared missing. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of passengers on board at the time of the accident.
“This is a tragic loss for our people. Many of the victims were breadwinners and young traders,” a regional official said, adding that investigations into the cause are underway. Survivors recounted chaotic scenes as passengers struggled without life jackets in the fast-moving river.
Deadly boat accidents are common in Nigeria, where water transportation remains a vital link between communities, especially in rural areas with poor road access. Overloading, use of poorly maintained wooden boats, and disregard for safety regulations have repeatedly contributed to high death tolls.
Just last month, another mishap on the same stretch of the River Niger claimed more than a dozen lives, highlighting recurring safety lapses.
Kogi State authorities have pledged to step up enforcement of safety standards, including mandatory use of life jackets and stricter checks on vessels. However, local residents say enforcement remains weak and boat operators often ignore guidelines.
For now, grieving families are left counting their losses, as rescue efforts continue and the state awaits a clearer picture of the final death toll from yet another devastating waterway tragedy.
