A 62-year-old woman who was found with a sack containing 178 rounds of live cartridges has told men of the Delta State Police Command that she bought the ammunition from the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State.
The state police command announced the arrest and recovery in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, as it added that operatives of the Bomadi Divisional Headquarters, while on a joint stop-and-search operation with vigilante group members, intercepted a motorcycle along the Bomadi–Tuomo Road.
During the interception, the woman, whose name was given as Charter Timide, was found with a concealed sack containing one 178 live cartridges neatly packed for delivery.
The command wrote: “When interrogated, the woman told the operatives that she purchased the cartridges from Onitsha Main Market, a hub long known for its bustling trade. Her confession immediately triggered further intelligence follow-up to uncover the destination and purpose of the ammunition.”
The woman was said to have given more useful information to the police operatives while the recovered items have been transferred to the State Headquarters for more discreet investigations in order to trace possible links to armed groups or black-market suppliers.
She is also expected to be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.
