Editorial: Nyesom Wike’s Political Double-Game, a Test of PDP’s Will to Survive

In Nigeria’s often unpredictable political theatre, few actors are as enigmatic and disruptive as Nyesom Wike.

The former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) continues to straddle an unprecedented and controversial line: holding membership and influence within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while actively serving and aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

This political double-dating, as many observers have called it, is not only shaking the foundations of the PDP but also raising profound questions about the integrity of party politics in Nigeria.

Wike’s maneuvering, while not illegal, represents a glaring ethical contradiction. He remains one of PDP’s most high-profile members, yet his allegiance seems increasingly tilted toward President Bola Tinubu and the APC. His statements in recent months – endorsing Tinubu for a second term and criticizing PDP leadership, as well as his action of sealing off the national secretariat of the party – are unbecoming of someone who still claims a stake in the PDP’s future. In any other well-structured democracy, Wike’s dual loyalty would be untenable.

The PDP, for its part, is caught in a political paralysis. Despite multiple calls for Wike’s expulsion, including from internal pressure groups like the PDP Professionals Forum, the party leadership has failed to take decisive action. This hesitation can be attributed to Wike’s considerable political machinery, financial muscle, and the internal factionalism that has weakened the PDP from within.

Rivers State remains ground zero in Wike’s political chess game. His feud with the now suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara has splintered the state’s PDP into rival factions. Wike’s influence over the state’s legislative and party apparatus appears to be a clear attempt to maintain control by proxy, a move that has only deepened the party’s internal crisis and further undermined its credibility.

Wike’s recent self-exiting from the party peace deal and threat to fight on accusing prominent party leaders, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, of dishonesty is nothing but an affront on the one time vibrant ruling party.

The contradiction of serving in an APC-led federal administration while trying to control a major opposition party is politically untenable and morally dubious. It sends the wrong signal to the electorate – that party platforms are meaningless and political identity is fluid based solely on personal ambition and access to power.

The PDP now stands at a crossroads. If it hopes to present itself as a credible alternative in the 2027 elections, it must confront the Wike dilemma head-on. Party loyalty and discipline cannot be optional, and political expediency cannot override ideological consistency. Wike should be given a clear choice: fully commit to the APC and relinquish his claims to the PDP, or return fully to the opposition fold and resign from his ministerial post in Tinubu’s cabinet.

This is more than just a test of Wike’s character – it is a test of whether the PDP can still function as a serious political entity. The longer the party tolerates this political duplicity, the closer it inches toward irrelevance.

In a country yearning for stable, principled leadership, the time for fence-sitting is over. The PDP must choose between political convenience and institutional coherence—and so must Nyesom Wike.
