Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has signalled his intention to take legal action against human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, over alleged defamatory statements. The development has sparked public interest, with many Nigerians surprised at Obi’s decision to pursue the matter in court.
According to reports, Obi’s legal team recently issued a letter to Adeyanju demanding that he delete a series of social media posts dating back to 2022 and publish a formal apology. The posts, which Obi’s camp considers defamatory, include accusations portraying him as a “fake messiah,” “religious bigot,” and “corrupt investor.”
Adeyanju, however, welcomed the legal threat, declaring that he was ready to face Obi in court. The activist, known for his combative style, suggested that defeating the suit would be as simple as proving the truth of just one of the contested claims. He publicly expressed eagerness for the legal showdown, describing Obi as a “pugilist” entering an arena he might later regret.
Observers note that Obi’s decision raises questions about his tolerance for criticism, especially given his prominent role in national politics and his association with the “Obidient” movement, whose online supporters are often accused of launching aggressive verbal attacks against political opponents. Critics argue that public figures of Obi’s stature are expected to show greater resilience to personal criticism.
The dispute comes amid another simmering legal tension. Just days earlier, Adeyanju’s lawyers wrote to one of Obi’s aides, Serah Ibrahim, threatening to sue her over alleged defamatory comments directed at Adeyanju’s wife. The activist’s camp has suggested that both cases, if pursued, could develop into protracted courtroom battles.
Legal analysts point out that if Obi proceeds with the lawsuit, the case could become drawn out, particularly if injunctions are sought to restrict Adeyanju’s speech during the proceedings. Political watchers warn that the matter may extend beyond the courtroom, potentially inflaming tensions between Obi’s loyal supporters and Adeyanju’s own large following of vocal allies.
For now, both sides appear to be preparing for a high-profile clash. Whether the case is settled out of court or proceeds into a protracted legal battle, Nigerians are bracing for what many already describe as a political “battle royal.”
