There was drama in Awada, near Onitsha, Anambra State, on Tuesday evening when a 28-year-old man attempted to take his own life by climbing a power transmission high-tension pole.

The man, identified as Mr. Okwudili David Onyiba, mounted the pole located behind Grace of God Mission, off NEPA Road, before residents quickly raised alarm. Police operatives from Awada Division responded promptly, cordoning off the area to prevent further danger and controlling the large crowd that had gathered at the scene.

Eyewitnesses said officers, with the help of concerned members of the public, engaged the man in several minutes of persuasion before he eventually climbed down to safety. He was immediately taken into protective custody.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had ordered that Onyiba undergo a thorough medical and mental health evaluation. The commissioner also assured that the police would provide support to ensure his well-being.

“The Command urges members of the public to always seek lawful and peaceful solutions to personal challenges, and to reach out to family, friends, or relevant support groups in times of distress,” Ikenga stated.

The police have promised to provide further updates on the matter as investigations continue.
