The financial crisis facing the main opposition leader in the country, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seems to have deepened as the party is considering seeking help from party members and is targetting at least N10,000 per person.
The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the party has decided to take the measure in order to get enough funding for its activities as the preparations for 2027 general election gather momentum.
The party has in recent times been hit by a series of crises, causing some of those regarded as having deep pockets, including governors, to leave the party in droves.
One of the major financiers of the party, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who is a major financier, has also caused division in the party by leading another faction of the party.
A highly competent source close to the Turaki faction of the party told Impact Nigeria News Online on Saturday evening that among its plan agenda, the party is embarking on a membership drive and contributions to fund its activities, therefore creating the impression that the party belongs to everyone and there is no godfather..
In fact, the idea was given a hint by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ini Ememobong, while appearing on a television programme in Abuja recently.
He had said the party moved from the bottom to the apex when it was in power for 16 years and has gone down again as an opposition party.
“We have reached the bottom of the valley, and now we are heading back up. This is a rebirth process, which is always painful. We are analysing our mistakes and successes.
He had also said their strategy this time was to go back to the party members and use funding to entice them, adding that if members made contributions, it will make them to have a voice in the party.
“When governors took over the funding, the people were pushed aside. We are returning to that voluntary model. If 60 million Nigerians give ₦10,000 each, that is a huge sum. We are seeing this mass movement already in states like Plateau and Akwa Ibom,” he was quoted as saying.
