A weapons and ammunition hideout concealed within a zinc structure and disguised as a piggery said to belong to the Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) has been uncovered at a community in Enugu State, it was gathered on Wednesday, June 10.
Troops of 82 Division Garrison of the Nigerian Army operating under Sector 1, Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Enugu State command, uncovered the arms cache in their ongoing Operation EASTERN SANITY II.
According to the Nigerian Army, on June 9, while acting on credible intelligence derived from previously arrested suspects affiliated with IPOB and ESN, security forces conducted a follow-up operation in Gariki community, Enugu South Local Government Area of the state.
During the operation, troops uncovered arms hideout concealed within a zinc structure disguised as a piggery while a thorough search of the site led to the recovery of a substantial cache of weapons and ammunition.
The arms and ammunition said to have been recovered by the troops included General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), RPG-7 launcher tube, AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, teargas gun with cartridges, AK-47 magazines, 270 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition and 478 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
Two suspected members of the outlawed groups were arrested while others fled on sighting the troops. All recovered items and the suspects have been handed over to the DSS operatives for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
