Law students of Atiba University, Oyo town, on Monday, August 24, locked up the gates of the institution when they protested over some of their grievances that are not resolved by the authorities of the institution.
The students, armed with placards of various inscriptions, took to the main road that led to the institution and later locked up the gates, vowing never to open them until their grievances are addressed.
Among some of the grievances, according to them, are lack of enough lecturers to teach them as well as inadequate facilities and that the Law degree programme in the school has not been accredited.
They also alleged that they have not been seeing their results after examinations despite payment of millions as school fees.
As the protest was ongoing, police officers arrived the scene and urged the students to remain calm, informing them that the university management had promised to send representatives to meet them on Wednesday. However, the students rejected the appeal outright.
They were said to have insisted that the Vice-Chancellor, the Founder and the Registrar must come out and address their concerns, vowing that until that happens, the gates would remain shut.
On hearing about the development, leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Monday issued a statement, declaring its support for the protest.
NANS urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to suspend the licence of the university until the issues affecting the Law students are adequately addressed.
“It’s time NUC suspends the university’s license until the issues affecting the law students are resolved. The leadership of NANS will be joining this agitation going forward,” NANS said in the statement.
