Six primary school teachers including a secondary school principal in Uduere Community Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta state are currently facing sack following their absenteeism from school and alleged extortion of money from their students.
The state Chairman, Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Mr Sunny Ogwu who confirmed this to our reporter on Thursday in Asaba, said that the primary school head Mrs Dora Akpede among others will “interview” the board to explain why they should remain in the state government employment scheme considering their frequent absenteeism and alleged extortion of money from their students.
He said: “the affected teachers, Head of School, and Principal will be interviewing the Board this week to determine their fate for their frequent absenteeism and alleged extortion of money from their students, the Okowa led administration has zero tolerance for indiscipline and frauds, we will not take it lightly with them” and frowned at the attitude of teachers in Public schools in the state towards discharging their official responsibilities, warning that the board would not in any way tolerate indolence, trunacy and misconduct.
Investigation revealed that public schools across Delta state have been faced with the problem of teachers including Principals allegedly engaged in extortion of money from their students and absenteeism, a situation described as pathetic and inhuman by the state government. But the state
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chief Patrick Ukah had last week threatened to sack teachers who had been indulged in the habits adding that strident measures were being taken to ensure discipline among teachers and Principals in the state.
At Otovwodo Primary School in Ughelli, the SUBEB boss however expressed displeasure that teachers’ lesson notes were not up to date and threatened that authorities of SUBEB will not tolerate such frequent absenteeism and nonchalant act of the teachers and frowned at the incessant rate of vandalisation of school facilities by unidentified hoodlums and called on the Communities’ leaders to help protect school facilities in their domain at all times.
Further investigation revealed that panic has gripped many teachers in the state following the stand of the state government to sack lazy teachers including those found to be involved in fraudulent extortion of money from their students.
