The Ogun State government on Wednesday, January 21, ordered the suspension of the selection process of the Awujale of Ijebuland.

The government ordered the suspension through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and has directed the kingmakers and the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to pause further actions pending fresh directives.

The directive was contained in a letter dated January 20 and addressed to the Executive Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government.

According to the letter, the government said it received many petitions from security agencies and key stakeholders regarding the process, prompting the suspension order which the government said was necessary in order to maintain public order and protect the integrity of the traditional institution.

The ministry also stated that the suspension became imperative to prevent tension and ensure that due process is followed in the interest of peace and stability within the community.

It advised all parties involved in the selection process to remain calm and await further instructions.

The seat of Awujale became vacant following the demise of Oba Sikiru Adetona.

When the last selection process was held this month, 94 princes and one princess were shortlisted by the Fusengbuwa Ruling House.
