In 2012, just before my graduation from the University, I sew a lovely maxi gown which I planned to use as one of my maternity wears. I was hopeful and believed that I would get married – and conceive immediately – soon after graduation, even though I wasn’t in any relationship at the time. So in very clear terms, the maxi gown was supposed to be one of the maternity gowns for my first pregnancy.
Guess what?
Few months after my graduation, I got a lot of marriage proposals, but I turned all of them down… That experience taught me some profound lessons.
Sometimes, we want something so bad and we believe that we are ready for it. It could be a new financial level, a new job, marriage, children, etc. We tell everyone who cares to listen that we are more than prepared and qualified to step into that level. We focus on it, we pray about it, we read, watch or listen to all the resources we can find about it, and we confess it.
Finally, sooner or later, God and the universe bring us an opportunity to possess that thing. And this is where it gets more interesting…
We begin to ask:
“Am I really ready to commit and make the sacrifices that this new level requires?”
“Can I combine this thing I want with “xyz”? If no, I think I’ll wait for the next time the opportunity comes. I’m not sure I still want it as badly as I’d thought.”
And many other similar statements.
I have realized that quite often when the opportunity we seek or the dream we desire arrives, we soon find that we’re not really prepared to make the sacrifices and commitment required to seize or maximize that new level.
Does any of the following sound like you:
- You badly want to be an entrepreneur but you can’t afford to make the required sacrifice? You can’t afford to invest in the needed trainings? You can’t skip sleep when the demand calls for it? You can’t pray like your life depends on it? You can’t voraciously read books and articles related to your niche and field in general?
- You badly want to be a wife or a husband but you can’t afford to alter your current schedule to accommodate the person and family you want to share the next phase of your life with? You can’t stand to view things from another person’s point of view? You can’t be flexible on any issue because you’re so set in your ways? You can’t read books or get any training on relationship and marriage?
- You badly want to get employed by an organization but you can’t stomach the idea that sometimes 8 to 5 would be 7 to 7, and you may even need to work on weekends sometimes?
You know the peculiar desire you have so fill in what you’d need to give up or give in to, in order to properly fit into that new level.
In my case back in 2012/2013, when the opportunity to get married presented itself, I soon found out that even though I was ready to say “I Do” and I had a lot of head knowledge about marriage, I was not emotionally and psychologically prepared for the demands of marriage. So I had to turn down the proposals that came my way in that period.
Dear Single, what is that thing that you can’t wait to be handed over you? 2020 is gradually wrapping up but you still have two whole months to achieve those milestones you set for the year. So, sit with yourself today and totally evaluate how prepared you are for the things you desire because trust me, the opportunity to have it is already by the corner. The question is: Are you ready to commit and do what it takes to have it?
Love and Wisdom,
ChinyereDistinguished
