The Nigerian Army on Sunday, April 26, said a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) died during a crossfire between soldiers and armed robbers during a robbery incident.
The Nigerian Army, through its Headquarters Guards Brigade, said the corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, died during the incident in the early hours of Saturday, April 25, at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, Abuja.
The army said the incident occurred when troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group, on routine night patrol, responded to a distress call following an armed robbery attack in the area.
It added that upon the arrival of the personnel, they came under gunfire from the fleeing armed robbers, resulting in a shootout.
In the course of the shootout, it said Jamiu was caught in the crossfire, adding that despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he succumbed to injuries sustained during the crossfire.
“Preliminary information indicates that the situation was fluid and highly volatile, as troops worked to repel the attackers and protect residents of the community from harm,” the Nigerian Army said in a statement on Sunday.
The Nigerian Army said it had initiated investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident, as it also stated that the remains of the corps member had been handed over to the appropriate authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
