Recently, the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta was transformed into a grand stage, not just for athletes, but for music royalty.
In what’s already being hailed as one of the most electrifying kick-offs in the National Sports Festival’s history, Nigerian music icons, ASA and DAVIDO delivered performances that will be talked about long after the medals are handed out.
And no, this wasn’t just a concert – it was a cultural event dressed in a sports jersey.
Dressed in elegant simplicity, ASA (Bukola Elemide) took the stage and, with her signature soulful poise, delivered a heartfelt rendition of the Ogun State anthem. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t flashy. But boy, was it powerful.
You could hear a pin drop as dignitaries – including Vice President Kashim Shettima (representing the president), former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Osun’s dancing Governor Ademola Adeleke, Shehu Dikko (Chairman, National Sports Commission) — watched in reverent silence. ASA’s voice, rich and stirring, filled the stadium with pride, nostalgia, and a touch of grace.
It was a masterclass in musical minimalism.
Then came the storm!
Just hours after setting social media ablaze with his appearance at his manager’s wedding, DAVIDO (David Adeleke) stormed the Gateway Games like a human firework.
As his name echoed through the loudspeakers, fans didn’t just cheer – they charged. Video clips making the rounds online show a tidal wave of excitement as fans tried to swarm the stage. Davido, clearly loving every second, sprinted to the spotlight, his energy matching the crowd’s hysteria beat for beat.
It was a high-octane performance with hits, dance moves, and enough swagger to shake the stadium’s foundations. If ASA was the calm before the storm, DAVIDO was the storm – and the crowd loved every second of it.

With early competitions in weightlifting and Kung Fu already underway, and many athletes set to compete, the 22nd National Sports Festival has officially started with a bang – and a beat.
