Some gunmen suspected to be bandits on Friday morning ambushed a police team that responded to a distress call regarding cattle rustling, killing a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and injuring three officers.
The DPO of Magaji Police Station, CSP Muhammad Sani Sagir, was killed by the bandits in Majen-Gobir Ward, Magaji community in Rimi Local Government Area of Katsina State when he and his team responded to the distress call around 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
A source close to the local government told Impact Nigeria News Online on Friday evening that after receiving the distress call, the police officers trailed the cattle rustlers to a forest.
However, as they attempted to recover some of the cattle, they were ambushed by the bandits and they came under heavy gunfire, causing the DPO to sustain serious injuries. He later died of his wounds.
The source added that three other officers also sustained injuries but they were quickly taken away and moved to a hospital by their colleagues after the bandits left the place with some of the cattle.
It was also gathered that the state police command had ordered a manhunt for the fleeing bandits while some police officers in the command have expressed concern over the frequent ambushes on personnel.
