In a fresh attack carried out by bandits in Niger State on Saturday, February 14, 33 persons were killed while two police stations and some buildings were set ablaze.
The bandits struck and carried out the dastardly acts in Konkoso, Tungan Makeri and Pisa communities all in Borgu Local Government Area of the state, went on killing spree and set buildings ablaze.
The latest onslaught is part of the sustained attacks that have plagued communities in the local government for more than five months.
A source close to the local government told Impact News Nigeria Online on Saturday evening that the marauders stormed Tungan Makeri in the early hours, killing six persons before moving to neighbouring Konkoso, where 26 were murdered and one other person was also shot dead in Pisa.
After carrying out the killings, they went ahead to set two police stations ablaze in Konkoso and Pisa while other buildings were razed in the communities.
The source added that the attackers who rode on motorcycles invaded the villages early in the morning, opened fire in coordinated attacks as the bandits were said to be many.
The source also disclosed that despite distress calls, security operatives did not arrive until after the bandits finished their killing spree.
However, spokesman of the state police command, while confirming the sad incident, disclosed that six persons were killed during the invasion of the communities.
“Report received indicated that at about 3:00 a.m., suspected bandits invaded Tunga-Makeri village via Shafachi district Borgu Local Government Area and during the attack, six persons lost their lives, some houses were also set ablaze.
“Meanwhile, joint security teams have been mobilised to the scene for assessment and effort to rescue the victims is ongoing,” he said.
