The driver of a Mercedes Benz on Saturday fled, abandoning the vehicle after killing a woman who was heading for a church service at a community in Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning at the NYSC Bus-Stop, inward Igando, when the driver of the Mercedes Benz C-300 hit the woman going for a service at the Mountain of Fire and Miracle (MFM), Igando, killing her on the spot.
The incident was announced by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a statement on Saturday evening, as it added after the man saw what he did, he abandoned the vehicle and fled.
“Reports indicated that the victim was lawfully on the designated pedestrian corridor when the vehicle, under circumstances yet to be ascertained, veered into her way.
“Upon receipt of distress alerts, LASTMA personnel stationed along the Igando axis promptly cordoned off the accident scene to forestall secondary collisions and ensure the safety of other road users.
“Vehicular movement within the corridor was regulated to prevent congestion and additional hazards, while requisite safety procedures were immediately activated,” it said.
LASTMA added that the abandoned vehicle was removed from the carriageway by its operatives in collaboration with officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Igando Division and is currently at the police station.
It was gathered that when news of the incident reached the MFM during service, the victim’s husband and some members of the church raced to the scene and took the remains of the woman to a nearby mortuary.
The police are said to have begun investigation into the incident while a manhunt had been launched for the fleeing driver of the car.
