Suspected terrorists have killed four people, including a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in an attack along the Jikamshi–Funtua road in Katsina State.
Sources said the victims were ambushed and shot dead by armed bandits on Monday evening while travelling along the notorious route, long plagued by insecurity.
Among those killed were Saidu Nasir and Saidu Liman, also known as Kalipha. Liman was reportedly on his way to complete his monthly NYSC clearance when the attackers struck.
Witnesses said Nasir had left his home earlier in the day in good health, unaware of the tragedy that would later claim his life. His body was later returned to his family with multiple gunshot wounds.
The incident marks the latest in a series of deadly attacks along the Jikamshi–Funtua axis, which has become a hotspot for banditry and ambushes targeting commuters.
Confirming the development, a security update by Bakatsine described one of the victims as a young man dedicated to his education and national service, noting that the killing reflects the worsening insecurity facing civilians in the region.
The statement said the deaths have plunged families, friends, and classmates into mourning, while raising fresh concerns about the safety of young Nigerians, particularly those participating in the mandatory service scheme.
“The grief facing his family, friends and classmates is profound, as communities continue to demand safety over everything else,” the statement read.
It also questioned the government’s response to the recurring attacks, asking how many more lives would be lost before decisive action is taken to secure major highways.
Residents have repeatedly raised alarm over the deteriorating security situation, urging authorities to intensify efforts to protect travellers.
The latest killings add to the growing toll of violence in Katsina and other parts of northern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to operate, leaving communities vulnerable and in fear.
