After spending over two months in detention, a Kano State High Court has granted bail to Deji Adeyanju, an activist arrested by the Nigeria Police in December 2018.

Adeyanju was freed on bail on Monday when his matter came up, with a condition that he must provide sureties and N500,000, according to his lawyers.

Deji Adeyanju was arrested on December 13 over allegations he was involved in a murder in Kano in 2005.

The police did not formally arraign Adeyanju for the alleged murder.

Although Adeyanju was charged for murder in 2005 at the Kano State High Court, he was discharged and acquitted in 2009 after a lengthy trial.

Adeyanju who has been vocal about his opposition to the Buhari administration was arrested but not arraigned by the police, fueling speculations that his detention has political motivation. But the police denied the allegations.

A close associate of the freed activist, Theophilous Agada told an online medium that Adeyanju would meet the bail requirement on Monday.

“He was asked to provide a senior civil servant in Kano State, and two pieces of land with N500,000,” Mr Agada said. “We are confident that this requirement would be met and he’ll be released today.
