An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of Kehinde Adesanya, a 37-year-old nurse, at the Ibara Correctional Centre over alleged conspiracy, attempted abortion and murder of a corps member, identified as Victoria Ariyo.
Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, died last Tuesday from complications arising from a suspected abortion procedure.
Her remains were reportedly interred at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu road in the state capital.
The remand order was issued by O.O. Sam-Obaleye on Thursday, March 26, when Adesanya was arraigned before the magistrates’ court on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, attempt to procure abortion, and murder of the corps member.
Moving an ex parte motion, police counsel, Solomon Babalola, prayed the court for an order to remand the defendant in custody.
Babalola sought the defendant’s remand for 60 days in the first instance at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
According to Babalola, the alleged offences were committed between January and March in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta.
He alleged that the defendant conspired with others now at large to procure an abortion for Ariyo in a bid to terminate a pregnancy, adding that the drugs allegedly led to her death.
In her ruling, Sam-Obaleye granted the application and ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the state DPP.
The judge thereafter adjourned the case till May 26 for mention.
Recall that the court had, on Monday, March 23, remanded Abbas Olalekan, a staff member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), over an alleged conspiracy and attempt to procure an abortion on the now-deceased corps member.
The 43-year-old Olalekan, who resides in the Mosafuneto area, Oke-Ata, Abeokuta, is charged with conspiracy and unlawful attempt to procure abortion by supplying drugs.
The prosecution counsel, Inspector Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between January and March 2026 in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta.
He alleged that the defendant conspired with others now at large to commit a felony, to wit, abortion.
The prosecutor further alleged that the defendant attempted to procure an abortion by supplying drugs to the now-deceased corps member.
