The chief Magistrate court Wuse Zone 2 has invited five social media users for the maliciously defaming and attacking the character of gospel minister Mercy Chinwo and her husband Blessed Uzochikwa through a social media post that went ballistic.
According to the summon made available by Channnels Television on Thursday, the chief Magistrate, Emmanuel Iyanna directed that the five defendants in April 23, 2024 should appear in person before the court to respond to the charges leveled against them by the complainants.
The five defendants are Okoronkwo Ejike, Kinsley Ibeh, Dj Spoiltkid, Terrence Ekot and Samuel Agozie.
The complainants who had kept their son away from the public eye decide last week to post a picture of him on their Instagram. After the child’s picture was posted, the defendants speculated that the child was a ‘carbon copy’ of Nathaniel Bassey stating that a DNA should be conducted to ascertain the paternity of the child.S
Ejike post reads “This Mercy Chinwo’s child was hiding after giving birth, but the truth is that this baby looks exactly like singer Nathaniel Bassey. Nothing nobody wants to reason with me oh. This child is Nathaniel Bassey’s Baby. Maybe a secret away match occurred, otherwise, how can we make empirical sense of this?”
Another post by a very fied X user Dj Spoitikid where he quoted the statement by Ejike along with a screenshot of the post and added “When are we doing DNA test.”
The petition field by gospel artiste and her husband through ‘law corridor’ a law firm based in Abuja, and led by Pelumi Olajengbesi, noted that the actions of the defendants amounted to cyber bullying, harmful lies, cyber stalking and character assassination.
They noted that the action of the social media users were contrary to section 391 of the penal code and section 24 (1) B of the cybercrimes (Prohibition, prevention) Act 2015.
The criminal complaints filed before magistrate reads “the individuals criminally injured the reputation and the image of the complainants across the globe resulting from their international defamatory posts and an act of cyber stalking.”
On the other hand Gospel Singer Nathaniel Bassey had petitioned the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egetokun to investigate and prosecute four social media users for the injurious accusation leveled on him that he was the father of Mercy Chinwo’s child.
The petition was submitted to the IGP on 1 April 2024, and it reads “On Friday the 29th day of March 2024, Mercy Chinwo Blessed another popular gospel music minister, and her husband posted pictures of their son and themselves on different social media platforms.”
