A man described as a ‘major drug courier’ has been arrested by men of the Nigerian Army after he was found with 10 sacks of Cannabis Sativa which he was transporting from Ekiti State to Kogi State.
The man, Johnson Ayo, was arrested by men of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army as he was on his way to deliver the hard drugs at the Obajana area of Kogi State.
It was gathered that the arrest took place on Monday, November 24, when troops deployed at Agbede Response Area conducted a routine stop-and-search on the Toyota Camry driven by the man.
According to the Nigerian Army in a statement on Tuesday, November 25, in order to evade detection, he was found with a branded police hat and belt which he displayed on the dashboard of the vehicle and that act further raised the soldiers suspicion.
When the car was eventually searched, 10 sacks of Cannabis Sativa weighing 108.8 kilogrammes and concealed in the booth of the car, were recovered .
“Preliminary findings indicated that large-scale drug movement of this nature not only supports criminal networks financially, but also fuels the chain of activities that often escalate into banditry within the state and surrounding regions,” the statement added.
The man and the hard drugs were said to have been handed over to the officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and subsequent prosecution.
