Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has raised the alarm of the surveillance of the Kuje Correctional Centre by operatives of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) over alleged plans to rearrest him upon his release.
Malami disclosed this in a press release by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, which was shared across various social media platforms on Wednesday, January 7.
In the statement, entitled ‘DSS Surveillance at Kuje Correctional Service Over Alleged Plot to Rearrest Abubakar Malami Raises Grave Rule of Law and Safety Concerns,’ the former AGF said he has been informed of plans by government security agencies to rearrest him immediately upon his release, despite being granted bail by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The alarm comes hours after Malami, alongside his acquittance and son, were granted bail in the sum of N500 million each by the Federal High Court in Abuja in the 16-count alleged money laundering charge brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The statement described the development as “deeply troubling and raises grave concerns about due process, the rule of law, and personal safety.”
It further recalled that the former minister was granted bail weeks ago by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), noting that the bail order was, however, not honoured, alleging that the EFCC declined to effect his release and frustrated a valid judicial decision.
