The Executive Director, Halifield Schools, Mrs. Halima Oke has disclosed that education is an all-encompassing activities for the physical, mental and emotional  development of a child, adding that sporting activities are part of learning.

She stated this at the schools’ 7th biennial inter-house sports competition which took place at the Sport Complex of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos recently.

According to her, the private institution could not organise the competition for three years owing to the deadly pandemic.

She said, “We have come to realize that education is not just academics while one of those things that enhance academics is sports. Physical exercise creates fitness in a child and it is fun to the children being excited.

“And when you do these things that are fun to do, they enhance learning. Education is not just studies or academics, there are other things that enhance education: one of them is sport. This is the reason we take part in competitions such as aerobic, sports to ensure our children are in good form as we can see the excitement in them at this year’s sports competition today.”

She advised the over all best house in the competition to continue to work hard.

Sports Director, Halifield Schools and Chairman, Planning Committee, Christian Igweh called on the government to invest more on sports which would go a long way to engage the youth and address the problem of insecurity in the country.

Igweh, who urged the government to increase sports budgetary allocation and institute sports academy to groom the youth, was optimistic that this would take a lot of youths off the streets and reduce juvenile crimes significantly.

“Sports is a key part of our programme in Halifield Schools as we believe that  while some will excel in academics, others would also take to sports” he said.

Some of the events that took place include slippers race, filling the basket, bursting the balloon, sack relay race, 400m boys and girls among other exciting activities.

In all, the Blue House emerged the overall best while Green House was the first runner up and Yellow House the second runner-up.
