Some followers of Shiite sect leader, Ibrahim El-zakzaky, on Tuesday, November 25, marched through some streets in Katsina State to protest over what they described as the abduction of school children in Kebbi and Niger states.
The followers, carrying placards with various inscriptions, marched on Tuesday afternoon and chanted various songs to denounce the abduction. Their march caused some tension in Katsina metropolis before the residents were told that it was a peaceful procession.
No fewer than 25 female students were abducted from the Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State on November 17 while the vice principal, Hassan Makuku, was killed during the attack.
Also, over 300 students and 12 teachers were abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, on November 21.
However, as of November 25, 50 students have managed to escape, while 265 individuals, including 239 nursery and primary school pupils, 14 secondary school students, and 12 teachers remain in captivity.
According to a competent source at the venue of the procession, the Shiite members, during the protest, urged the Federal Government to act swiftly to secure the students release and strengthen protection for civilians across the region.
Calls for peace across Nigeria in general and the Northern region in particular also echoed throughout the procession.
