According to a statement released by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Monday, a tragic accident involving a containerized truck and a female biker resulted in the biker’s untimely death at the Sifax inward Iganmu Bridge area of Lagos State.

Preliminary reports indicate that the truck driver, while driving downhill on the Iganmu Bridge, lost control of the containerized truck, which tragically toppled onto a female biker, causing her immediate death.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) announced the tragic incident via its official X handles, with the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, providing further details in an official statement.

The statement partly read, “Early this morning, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency responders recovered the body of a female biker trapped under a loaded containerized truck in Lagos.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver, who was speeding, lost control and caused the truck to fall on the female biker. The driver fled the scene upon realizing the severity of the accident.”

Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, confirmed the tragic accident occurred at approximately 6:15 am. In a statement, Giwa explained that “LASTMA officers on the scene promptly summoned assistance from other emergency agencies including the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) to initiate a swift rescue operation.

Giwa further disclosed that the Lagos State Ambulance Service promptly removed the deceased’s body from the scene while LASTMA personnel and other emergency responders worked together to clear the toppled containerized truck from the Iganmu Bridge, thereby restoring traffic flow in the area.

He also confirmed that in order to maintain safety and security during the rescue operation, police officers were swiftly deployed to the scene to provide assistance and support to the other emergency responders, thereby ensuring a well-coordinated and effective response to the tragic accident.

The Governor’s aide also offered his sincere condolences to the bereaved family, while at the same time issuing a strong appeal to all truck drivers to strictly observe speed limits both within Lagos and when traversing other regions, as a means to prevent similar tragic accidents from occurring in the future.

Giwa further appealed to both commercial and private motorcycle riders to follow the traffic rules and regulations, as specified in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
