The Federal Government, through the Department of State Services (DSS), on Monday, February 16, filed criminal charges against Mallam Nasir El-Rufai before the Federal High Court, Abuja, over alleged unlawful interception of communication and related offences.
According to the charge sheet dated 16 February 2026, El-Rufai was accused of admitting during a televised interview that he and associates unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.


The charges, brought by the DSS, include alleged violations under Section 12(1) and Section 27(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, as well as Section 131(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003. The prosecution alleges that the acts in question compromised public safety and national security and created apprehension among members of the public.
