FIFA has dealt a major blow to South Africa’s qualification hopes after ruling that Bafana Bafana fielded an ineligible player in their recent clash against Lesotho.

The governing body announced that the match has been forfeited, with Lesotho awarded a 3–0 victory and three points.

In addition, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has been fined CHF 10,000, while midfielder Teboho Mokoena, at the centre of the controversy, received an official warning.

The decision dramatically reshapes the group standings. Lesotho, initially seen as underdogs, now leapfrog rivals in the table, tightening the race for qualification. For South Africa, the punishment not only strips them of crucial points but also raises questions about administrative oversight within SAFA.

Reactions have been swift. Lesotho fans celebrated the ruling as justice served, praising FIFA’s firm stance on rule enforcement. In contrast, South African supporters expressed disappointment, with many criticising the federation for what they described as a “preventable error” that could cost the team dearly.

SAFA has yet to confirm whether it will appeal the decision. Insiders suggest that the body may seek to challenge the ruling, though FIFA’s track record on eligibility breaches leaves little room for reversal.

For Mokoena, the warning is a personal reprieve, sparing him harsher sanctions but placing him under scrutiny for future matches.

This incident adds to a growing list of cases where national associations have been punished for fielding ineligible players, reinforcing FIFA’s zero-tolerance policy. With qualification still wide open, South Africa must now regroup quickly or risk watching their campaign unravel due to an administrative misstep.

The ruling significantly alters the Group C table: Benin now leads on goal difference, tied with South Africa on 14 points, while Nigeria and Rwanda trail with 11 points each.
