One of those who just graduated from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and did her convocation ceremony on Tuesday, January 20, has given details of the tortuous journey of her academic programme in the institution.
The fresh graduate, Victoria Morenikeji Sangotola, who bagged a Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, said she spent seven years for the course meant to be completed in five years.
She disclosed that spending seven years for the course was due to the COVID-19 pandemic which led to closure of institutions of higher learning in 2020 as well as various strikes by lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
She added that she also faced trouble moments in her academic programme when her father died when she was in 300-level and things became worse for her as her mother also died when she was in 500-level.
She said her determination made her to sail through the course while dedicating her degree to her parents whose names she gave as Thomas and Comfort.
She gave her academic sojourn in a post on her X handle and wrote: “Five years turned seven. No extra year, just COVID-19 and ASUU.
“Lost my Dad in 300 Level. Mum followed in 500 Level. Carried on like nothing happened.
“This degree is for you, Thomas and Comfort (her parents). I know you’re proud of me in heaven.
