The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Thursday, April 16, said it had apprehended a motorist who mobilised some commercial motorcycle riders to attack its personnel in Edo State.
The FRSC said the man carried out the dastardly act after he was found by the patrol team to have committed an offence of seatbelt violation at a highway in the state.
It was gathered that the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 11, involved a patrol team from RS5.1 Edo Sector Command who flagged down the driver after he was found not to have used the seatbelt.
However in a brazen act of defiance, the driver fled the scene with an FRSC Marshal still engaged in enforcement, before mobilising a group of commercial tricycle operators who attacked the officers.
During the attack, one of the marshals was pushed into a gutter and assaulted, while the team leader was also physically attacked before the driver and the Okada riders escaped.
Upon swift collaboration with security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), the offender was tracked, apprehended and has since confessed to the crime, expressing remorse and apologising for his actions.
He is expected to be charged to court as soon as possible while the Corps Marshal emphasised that assault on law enforcement officers is a serious criminal offence and will be met with the full weight of the law.
