Gunmen believed to be bandits have killed the Imam of a mosque as well as 12 other residents during a Saturday night attack on a community in Sokoto State.
The gunmen on motorcycles invaded Illela Dangware village in Goronyo Local Government Area of state around 10:30 p.m., shooting sporadically and killing the victims in the process.
It was gathered that more residents of the village would have been killed by the marauders if not because many of them had already fled into the bush when they got a hint regarding the coming of the bandits.
A source close to the local government area told Impact Nigeria News Online that among those killed were four members of the same family while the Imam was said to have told them he was the Islamic leader of the village, a plea that did not yield any result as they went ahead to kill him.
The source said it was after the gunmen had carried out the killing and left that security operatives arrived the village.
In another sad development, also on Saturday night, bandits raided Kurawa, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of the state, taking advantage of heavy rainfall, strong winds and poor visibility.
According to sources in the community, the bandits carried out the attack for about three hours with no intervention from security forces, vigilantes, or forest guards.
It was gathered that during the attack, one resident known simply as Sabi’u was killed, a number of residents abducted while homes were looted and valuables taken away.
At roughly the same time, sources said another attack was reported in Garin Zago community in Tara Ward, where a resident, Salisu Adamu, was reportedly killed and another person shot.
The Northern part of the country, especially the North-West, has been under the grips of bandits and terrorists who unleash mayhem on residents of various communities, killing people and abducting others for ransom.
