In a major global advancement for African healthcare excellence, renowned Nigerian neurosurgeon Dr. Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim has been appointed as Medical Director of the Freeman Children’s Clinic in Joplin, Missouri.
The appointment marks another groundbreaking landmark in the career of a medical pioneer who famously shattered glass ceilings as West Africa’s first indigenous-trained female neurosurgeon.
In her new administrative and clinical leadership role within the Freeman Health System, Dr. Aliu-Ibrahim will oversee pediatric clinical operations, direct specialized patient care frameworks, and expand healthcare delivery for children and families across the region.

Dr. Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim earned her medical degree at the University of Ilorin before undergoing rigorous residency training in neurosurgery at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, under Professor B.B. Shehu—becoming the first woman certified as a neurosurgeon in West Africa.
Dr. Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim extended her pediatric sub-specialization through residency training at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and a prestigious Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School.
She contributed extensively to neurosurgical literature and served at landmark health institutions, including the National Hospital Abuja and University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).
