A man has been confirmed dead while his wife is in critical condition after a trailer carrying granite lost control and landed on their car in Lagos State.
The accident occurred early on Thursday morning at the Eleko junction along the Lekki-Epe Expressway when the driver of the trailer lost control apparently as a result of brake failure.
It was gathered that the driver of the trailer was coming from the Epe end of the ever-busy highway on a high speed and on getting to the junction, the brakes of the articulated vehicle failed, causing it to veer off its own lane and land on the Toyota Camry of the couple who were heading to Epe from Ajah.
The impact of the fall caused the husband and wife to be trapped inside the car and after they were brought out through the efforts of officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and bystanders, the husband was found dead while the wife sustained serious injuries.
The critically injured wife was taken from the accident scene by the FRSC paramedics team to the nearest hospital while the body of the husband was deposited at a morgue in the area.
Sadly, the driver of the articulated vehicle, on seeing the devastation he caused, abandoned the vehicle and fled. The police have declared a manhunt for his arrest.
The accident cased traffic bottleneck on the stretch of the highway but LASTMA officials as well as policemen were on ground to control the traffic situation.
