Following a series of deadly attacks in Benue State, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. Kayode Egbetokun on June 16, 2025, visited the state and ordered immediate security reinforcements.
Egbetokun met with Governor Hyacinth Alia at the Government House in Makurdi, where he condemned the killings as “senseless acts of terrorism” and offered condolences on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force. He was accompanied by top police officials, including DIG Yakubu Kwazhi, DIG Adebola Hamzat, AIG Zachariah Fera, and CP Abayomi Shogunle.
The IGP then visited Yelwata in Guma LGA, one of the hardest-hit areas, alongside Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa. There, he met with victims and local leaders, assuring them of improved security.
Egbetokun directed the immediate deployment of tactical units to vulnerable areas and placed DIG Kwazhi in charge of overseeing operations in the state.
Wrapping up his visit, the IGP addressed officers in Makurdi, praising their resilience and pledging continued support. He reaffirmed the police force’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s security agenda and vowed that perpetrators of the attacks would be brought to justice.
The police promised not to relent until peace is fully restored.
