President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to expect an economic viable country in due course.
Tinubu made the remarks at the Eagles Square while delivering his June 12 Democracy Day speech 2024 to mark the 25th Anniversary of Unbroken Democracy in Nigeria.
He reflected on the nation’s journey from the struggles of military rule to becoming Africa’s most populous democracy.
The President acknowledged the economic challenges facing Nigeria and highlights ongoing reforms aimed at creating a stronger economic foundation for future growth.
He paid tribute to the individuals who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s democratic struggle, including MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and others.
He emphasized that democracy is more than just holding elections; it is a way of life that includes freedom of speech, liberty, and peaceful transitions of power.
Tinubu made reference to the negotiations with organized labour on a new national minimum wage, emphasizing the importance of cooperation over conflict in resolving disputes.
The commander in chief urged Nigerians to embrace the challenges of the future and to continue moving forward together toward progress and prosperity.
Tinubu falls heavily on Stage
Meanwhile, reactions have trailed President Tinubu heavy fall earlier in Abuja while attempting to mount the rostrum in the midst of several aides and security personnel.
In a message posted on his official social media handle, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Peter Obi called for compassion, empathy, and unity in the pursuit of a brighter future for Nigeria.
Obi wrote, “I was saddened to learn of President Tinubu’s unfortunate fall today. I wish him well. We achieve nothing by gloating about an accident that could well happen to any of us.
“We are all human beings, and while we profoundly disagree on how to move Nigeria forward, we must remember our common human frailty.
“Let us stay focused on the issues that will lead to a new Nigeria. May this moment serve as a poignant reminder of our shared humanity and the need for compassion, empathy, and unity in our pursuit of a brighter future for our great nation.”
Earlier, Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, had also sympathized with Tinubu following his fall.
He said, “I sincerely sympathise with President Bola Tinubu, @officialABAT, over this unfortunate incident as he was set to review the parade on Democracy Day. I do hope that all is well with him.”
The incident occurred when President Tinubu slipped while boarding the parade vehicle at the Eagles Square. His security details and aides quickly rushed to his aid, assisting him in regaining his balance.
