Following fears of fresh attacks, authorities of Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State where over 150 residents were killed by terrorists have imposed curfew on the local government.
The curfew is to be from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. everyday until further notice.
Terrorists struck Woro and Nuku communities in the local government early this month and launched coordinated attacks, killing over 150 persons. The state government however put the death toll at 75.
Chairman of the local government, Abubakar Abdullahi Danladi, announced the imposition of the curfew in a statement on Tuesday, February 17, saying it becomes effective immediately.
The decision to impose the curfew was reached after a comprehensive security review with security agencies and community stakeholders, and it was described as a measure designed to protect the lives and property of all residents.
According to the directive, during the curfew hours, all movements, vehicular and pedestrian, are strictly prohibited throughout the local government area.
The chairman said: “The safety of our people is our utmost priority. This curfew is a difficult but necessary step to ensure that we can stabilise the security situation. I appeal to all citizens for their full cooperation and understanding during this period.
“Security agencies have been deployed to enforce the order strictly. Residents are advised to plan their movements accordingly and comply with the directive for their own safety.”
The killings that took place in the Woro and Nuku communities elicited widespread condemnations from the country as well as from the international community.
